Women's wrestling in Iran: challenges and opportunities

A guide to women's wrestling in Iran: answers to families' concerns, the benefits of Alysh wrestling for girls, and an introduction to the women's section of MHP CLUB in Amol, with a safe space and a female coach.

When wrestling is mentioned, most of our minds go to familiar images: the pahlavans of Mazandaran, packed halls and championship podiums. But in recent years a new image has taken its place beside the old ones: girls who, fully covered and in a separate, safe space, practise wrestling techniques and, in disciplines such as Alysh wrestling, carry Iran's flag in international arenas [3].

Women's wrestling in Iran has found its own path, a path designed with respect for families' culture and values, and it gains more followers every day. Even so, it is natural that many families still have serious questions: is this sport suitable for our daughter? What is the training environment like? How are dress and privacy respected? Won't wrestling make my daughter rough?

In this article from the MHP CLUB knowledge centre we answer these questions honestly and without exaggeration; we describe the branches of women's wrestling, review the real benefits of this sport for girls, and explain what features a proper women's club should have.

Women's wrestling in Iran: from Alysh to classical styles

When we speak of women's wrestling, we do not mean a single discipline. In Iran, one of the active branches for women is Alysh wrestling, a discipline from the family of belt wrestling that is recognised under the umbrella of United World Wrestling [1] and in which athletes hold the opponent's belt and try to execute a technique. The important point for families is that Alysh is done in a dedicated uniform with full body cover, and for that reason it is fully compatible with our country's cultural rules. The Iranian wrestling federation has held the national championships and national-team trials in women's belt wrestling and grappling [2], and Iran's women's team has taken part in Alysh at the World Nomad Games [3].

Alongside Alysh, other branches of women's wrestling exist at world level; which branches are active in Iran depends on the rules of the country's official sports bodies, and it is best to ask the federation or the provincial wrestling board before deciding. The path of growth is still under way, but the direction is clear: wrestling is no longer a purely male sport.

Mazandaran province, always the cradle of wrestling's greats, has a prominent role in this change too. In a city like Amol, in our experience, more and more families are looking for a reliable option for women's sport, one that has technical quality and also puts their minds at ease culturally.

Why wrestling is a smart choice for girls

Wrestling is not only a competitive sport; it is a school of character. The experience of many coaches shows that girls who train in wrestling properly grow in many dimensions of life:

  • Self-confidence: a girl who learns to defend herself on the mat and fight for her goal stands firmer at school, at university and in social life.
  • Strength and fitness: wrestling engages almost every muscle group and builds a strong base of strength, balance and coordination.
  • Discipline: regular training, weigh-ins, respect for coach and opponent; all of this builds an order that carries over into study and work.
  • Self-defence skill: wrestling techniques give girls a real ability to control physical situations, a skill that creates an inner sense of security.
  • Emotional management and mental endurance: losing, trying again and winning; that cycle instils patience and hard work in the athlete.

The interesting point is that these benefits are not reserved for champions. Even if your daughter never competes, these regular sessions will be a lifelong asset for her.

Families' common concerns and honest answers

Is the training space safe and separate?

This is families' most important and most legitimate concern. A reputable club must have separated the women's section completely from the men's; not only in training hours but in space, entrance and session management. The coach must be a woman and no unrelated person may have access to the training area. Before signing up, visit the club and see these things with your own eyes.

What is the sportswear like?

In disciplines such as Alysh wrestling, the official competition uniform provides full body cover, and in training, too, suitable and comfortable cover is the accepted standard. Put simply: there is no conflict between taking wrestling seriously and keeping the dress families respect.

Will wrestling make my daughter rough?

Coaches' experience shows the opposite. Proper wrestling is built on respect, control and the pahlavan's code of manners. An athlete who knows her strength and has learned to control it usually behaves more calmly and with more poise than others. Violence is the product of lack of skill and anger, not of proper training.

Won't this sport harm girls' bodies?

Every competitive sport carries risks, but in a proper environment, with a sound warm-up, step-by-step teaching of techniques and training matched to age and readiness, that risk is greatly reduced. Coaches' experience shows that many injuries happen in unstructured environments, where an athlete enters heavy techniques without a movement base.

Important reminder: the content of this section is general information only and is not a substitute for the opinion of a physician, physiotherapist or dietitian. Before starting any serious sports programme, especially at a growing age, consult a physician.

A checklist for choosing a wrestling club for your daughter

Before the final decision, check these points:

  1. Is the women's section completely separate and does it have a female coach?
  2. Does the coach have a recognised qualification and record in wrestling or related disciplines?
  3. Does the club have an individual programme and assessment for each athlete, or does everyone get one copied programme?
  4. Are sessions grouped by age and level of readiness?
  5. Are the warm-up, cool-down and gradual teaching of techniques taken seriously?
  6. Is the club acceptable in hygiene, standard mats and ventilation?
  7. Is there a chance for a familiarisation session or a consultation before signing up?

If the answer to most of these questions is yes, you can trust with more peace of mind.

The women's section of MHP CLUB: the same standard, in a safe space

At MHP CLUB, the specialist wrestling academy in Amol, the women's section runs with the same standard and quality as the men's, but in a completely separate and safe space and with a female coach. Complete separation of the space, appropriate dress and respect for the culture of Mazandarani families are our non-negotiable principle.

Women's training at MHP CLUB follows the "7-step MHP method", designed by the club's founder and head coach, who holds a doctorate in sport management: it starts with foundation and physical literacy, continues with discipline and technique, then reaches strength and competition readiness, and finally aims at the champion mindset and long-term development. So a girl who takes her first step on the mat today has a clear roadmap for years ahead.

Another distinguishing point is the "individual development file": every athlete receives her own programme on the basis of an individual assessment, not a copy of someone else's. Because we have come to believe that "champions are made, not born", and making is not possible without knowing the individual precisely.

Summary

Women's wrestling in Iran, centred on disciplines such as Alysh, is a real opportunity for interested girls; an opportunity to build self-confidence, physical strength and a discipline that stays with them all their lives. The challenges, from a shortage of facilities to cultural worries, are real, but the answer to them is not to give up; it is the informed choice of a safe, separate and proper environment. A family that chooses a club with open eyes has in fact taken the biggest step for its daughter's future.
