What proper training looks like for a young wrestler

A child is not a small adult. Youth training must be designed on growth science — not a lightened copy of a champion's program.

One of the most common mistakes in youth sport is taking an adult program, making it 'lighter', and giving it to children. A child's body and mind are not a scaled-down adult — they are under construction, with rules of their own.

First: physical literacy, then technique

Before a child learns techniques, they must learn movement: running, rolling, balancing, jumping and landing, controlling the body in space. This physical literacy is the floor on which every future skill is built — which is why good kids' training looks more like purposeful play than a technical session.

Second: technique in the right order

Wrestling skills have a learning order. Fundamentals — stance, motion, safe falling — come before complex techniques, and each new skill stacks on the last. Rushing that order is exactly where injuries and permanent bad habits are born.

Third: intensity arrives last

Intensity and competition are added last, once the movement and technical base exists. A child pushed early into competitive pressure may collect a few early medals — but that is the group most likely to quit the sport in adolescence.

Discipline and joy — together

The best youth program is one a child wants to return to while taking training etiquette seriously. That is discipline without humiliation: clear rules, a respectful tone, and a coach who models the behavior.

At MHP CLUB these principles run through the seven-stage athlete pathway, from foundation to long-term development. If your child is at the start of that road, an intake assessment is the best first step.
